Canadians love to get together and perhaps one of the most popular things Canadians do together is drinking!
Not just something to be enjoyed, acohol is the perfect catalyst and amplifier for social interactions.
Whether celebrating the victory of their home team with a (few) beer, enjoying a bottle of Merlot at a restaurant for a romantic evening or announcing wedding vows over a glass of champaign, alcohol is able to bring the best out of every situation.
Over the years a set of rules and best practices for social drinkers was developed and observed by Canadians. However newcomers to Canada often don't recognize the subtle gestures and customs that are associated with social drinking. They are sometimes confused or even embarrassed by the lack of knowledge and understanding of the subject. And they are eager to learn.
So when our in-house connoisseur professor Larry Shyu decided to share his knowledge and collection in a presentation at MCAF on Sunday, people came running.
Professor Shyu has been drinking socially in Canada for more than 3 decades. He knows the inside and out of social drinking and is also an avid collector of wines from all over the world.
He focused his talk on the types of popular drinks in Canada and particular customs associated with different social settings. The best part- people actually got to sample some of his collection during the presentation.
As Ernest Hemingway once said:"I drink to make other people more interesting", professor Shyu and his collection did exactly that.
Everyone had a great time learning and bonding...and drinking responsibly (which means nobody spilled their drinks :)). It became a big party at the end with lots of laughs and new friendships.
