The Newcomer Children and Youth Case Manager provides settlement support for newcomer children & youth between ages of 5 and 30. The case manager provides direct assistance, referrals, and advocacy in a variety of areas to help clients meet their settlement needs, particularly in the areas of, community involvement, mental health supports, life skills and recreation opportunities. They support Children & Youth Program in its entirety including youth programs, activities, transportation and special events.
Key Duties:
- Provide initial and on-going needs assessment to newcomer children & youth;
- Assess educational, social and emotional challenges and gaps as faced by newcomer youth, and identify approaches to address those issues
- Orient, assist and advocate for newcomer youth in meeting their settlement needs including, but not limited to accessing training and education, establishing social networks, accompanying clients to appointment as needed
- Provide crisis counseling and referrals for newcomer youth, as needed
- Provide a case management approach for clients with active needs applying client centered, strengths based, anti-racist, and anti-oppressive practice
- Perform internal and external referrals and actively follow the success and weaknesses of referrals and services
- Support youth through legal processes including but not limited to: victim services, police reports, legal aide, court proceedings, and probation
- Support youth with housing needs (i.e. Precarious living situations, homelessness) and make appropriate referrals
- Develop close connections with and maintain ongoing relationships with local organizations and institutions to establish strong service bridging and to support broad based, relevant, community engagement;
- Complete monthly and quarterly reports in accordance with deadlines and program requirements
- Support the youth program in its entirety with developing and facilitating programs;supporting recruitment and registration for activities; transporting youth to activities
- Demonstrates commitment to continuous improvement by encouraging creativity, innovation, and excellence. Identifies opportunities for efficiencies, integration and partnerships within MCAF and the community.
The ideal candidate for this position will have:
Education:
- Relevant university degree or
- A college diploma with minimum of 2 years’ experience will be considered
Experience:
- At least 2 years of practical experience in providing services to youth in the community, including orientation, advocacy, and referral work
- Significant evidence of ability to empathize
- Experience with informal counseling / coaching techniques
- Experience with crisis intervention and ASSIST
- Experience in outreach, community development and marketing of program and services
Knowledge:
- Community resources and social services for youth requiring specialized support
- Issues facing newcomers in Canada and systemic barrier facing integration in education, social, cultural, and economic aspects of Canadian life
Skills:
- Excellent interpersonal, cross cultural, written and verbal communication skills
- Effective multitasking, priority setting and organization skills
- Strong ability to work in team and independently
- Demonstrated commitment to continuous learning and quality improvement
- Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain respectful, professional relationships
- Proficiency in the use of computers and various software applications.
Assets:
- Experience working with vulnerable and marginalized newcomer families with trauma
history
- Familiarity and experience in working with individuals encountering mental health
challenges
- Formal counseling experience
- Fluency in additional languages
Terms of employment:
- Contract - renewable pending continuation of funding
- Full time 37.5 hrs per week- Health benefits, RSP, additional vacation/sick days
- Recent Criminal Record and Vulnerable Sector Check
- Ability to work evenings and weekends on a regular basis
- Driver licence (class B) and clean driver abstract
